Our luggage on our 2010 Bangkok trip
As with most couples, one of the things Cholo and I disagree on every time we travel is the amount of suitcases/items I bring (and whether or not I really do need all of it). My logic has always been that you never really know what you'll need, and it's always better to be prepared. I would say it's a losing battle on his end though, as I always end up getting my way (and also end up using his baggage allowance allocation hehehe).
Whether we're flying off to another country or going on a roadtrip, one thing we both can agree on is that there are just some things we absolutely HAVE to have with us. These are our top 5 travel essentials -
1. A camera
This, of course, is must have #1. Anyone who knows us, knows that we love to document most everything in our lives.
Our Canon 450D used to be our camera of choice.
Using our 450D in Cambodia
About a year ago though, we decided to replace it with something waaaaay more compact, and that could capture videos as well.
One of our favorite ways to use our GoPro - documenting our roadtrip from this view.
The HERO4 Silver is perfect - we love the image quality, the ease of use (especially when paired with the GoPro app) and of course, the size of the camera. No more stressing about having a separate camera bag to protect the camera lens and all that.
Widget City's GoPros are very competitively priced, and there is a wide range of models to choose from.
2. Gadgets for entertainment purposes
We're actually the type of couple that when in transit, doesn't really notice how much time has passed. There have even been some instances wherein we've chatted about everything under the sun and talked each other's ear off, not noticing that it's already been hours.
iPad mini for games and magazines, iPod classic for music
We like to be prepared though, and one way to keep entertained during long trips would be by listening to our favorite playlists (Coldplay for Cholo, anything 90s for me) or reading magazines or playing games.
Our favorite gadget store for iPods, iPhones and iPads would have to be C's Gadget Shop. Check it out!
3. Sarong/ shawl/ scarf
Because you never know when you'll need something that can
-keep you warm
-be used as a cover-up
-act as a beach mat
-wipe up spills or dirt
Sprawled out on the grass at the 7107 music festival
4. A good carry-on bag
I wouldn't sacrifice bringing an item (or having a "Do I really need this?" debate), just because it won't fit in my bag. One of our trusty, reliable carry-on bag picks would definitely be a backpack.
Cholo and his favorite Jansport
Aside from the fact that it can store a lot, a backpack also gives you the freedom to use your hands to do other things (like hold your passport or ticket!) or carry other items. It's also perfect for times when you have to take another mode of transportation, like a boat, as it makes getting on it and off a lot easier.
For backpacks, Zalora's Jansport collection has a lot of cool options (and for both guys and girls).
5. Comfortable shoes
There's nothing worse than not enjoying a trip because of your shoe or outfit choice. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to suffer for fashion's sake.
The Sanuks we've had since 2009!
One of our favorite (and sorta matching) can-go-anywhere-pairs would be our trusty Sanuks. They've been to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and all around the Philippines. One whole day of walking in these and they still feel as comfortable as when you slip them on for the first time. It's also convenient how low maintenance they are, as they can be hand-washed.
